Goodbye cruel blogosphere!

March 31st, 2010

I’ve made the decision to move the blog. It’s languished quite a bit over here in the nethers of the internet. I’ve ignored it, largely because I’ve focused more on the Photoblog, and hence my mwyman.com domain gets all the attention.

So I’m moving the blog to http://blog.mwyman.com. I know, I know — stunning, unexpected, completely original address for it! Congratulate me later.

I’m hoping to keep the new blog more focused on things relating to the photography posted on the photoblog, or more closely related to life going on related to the photos.

Happenings

Wedding. Honeymoon. Life.

Somehow these things all take precedence over posting on a silly blog nobody reads.

Go figure.

Somehow offended the biking gods…

June 5th, 2009

So I’m trying to bike to work more… Hopefully much much more…

So yesterday I’m all dressed for riding, got my clothes packed, laptop arranged… Grab my bike - flat tire!

Only one spare tube, so I skip riding and stop on my way home for more tubes. I go to fix the flat and discover my tire treads have a hole right through them (rock, or something stuck in it). That’s fine, they’re old (original on the bike) so its probably time for new tires anyways.

So this morning I have new tires and new tubes. I’m all set and ready to bike to work! Nothing seems wrong - I hopped on and got pedaling…

Four miles in, I notice a regular scraping sound. Look down and my tire is bumping against the brake pad. I gently stop and get off the bike… The tire had gotten loose from the rim! Great - I need to deflate the tube and reset the tire…

Barely touch the tire to take a look and - HISSSSSSSSS… now the tire is seated just fine, but the tube is empty (and punctured!)…

Luckily I had a spare, but my little pump is pretty worthless (as I discovered!). Had to walk over a half mile (in bike cleats!) back to The Depot, which thankfully is bike-friendly and has several tire pumps on hand…

Did I not notice myself cutting off a bicyclist, that my bike karma is that bad?!

I suck at updates…

Title kinds says it all…

iPhone Wordpress says it’s been 16 posts since last May 1… I’m REALLY boring!

It’s that day…

Progression of Excitement

April 25th, 2009

Year 12: “Cool! My birthday falls on a weekend! No school on my birthday!”

Year 16: “This is awesome - I can drive! Let’s cruise the town until curfew!”

Year 18: “Sweet - Adulthood! Voting! No more curfew! I can stay out all night and do whatever I want! … Oh, except…”

Year 21: “Party on! Now we can drink! Let’s party all night!”

Year 25: “Hey, did my auto insurance premium just go down?”

Year 28: “Sweet - my birthday falls on a weekend. I don’t have to work on my birthday!”

Babies, babies, everywhere!

February 16th, 2009

There’ve been two babies born into Jenny’s friends’ families recently, including the first baby boy of the group! Finally, us men aren’t going to be stuck around an enormous group of just girls when there are get-togethers anymore! Yay!

On a side note, I really must remember to bring my camera and macro lens to future baby-related events. I’m watching everybody else take photos of the little one, but from the usual snapshot angles. I learned from taking pictures of my cousin Andrew that the best photos are often about as close as you can get without waking the baby up with a cold lens to the face! :-)

Wedding Website!

February 2nd, 2009

Jenny and I are working on “Save the Date” magnets. We’ve decided to use Adobe InDesign to create our own after not finding templates we liked and could customize enough. We did notice that most of the templates include a website. While we didn’t feel a strong need to get one, being the geek I am I decided to check for available domains.

Most of the domains they show on the templates (to me, at least) sound absurdly sappy or wedding-esque. If I’m going to grab a website, I’d like it to have some possibility for post-wedding use…

Of course, most good .com domains are already taken… So we’ve grabbed a .info domain! Welcome www.MichaelAndJenny.info! The site will be under construction for a while, as we decide exactly what to put up. But hopefully before long…

The problem is, there’s so much wedding-related work to be done, the website may take a while.

I suck at updates…

December 16th, 2008

Life has been busy - and now we head into the holiday season.I’m contemplating some reworking to the site over the holidays, dependent of course on how ambitious I feel. One thought is to merge this site more closely with my photoblog, perhaps even relocating to mwyman.com in a subfolder (or subdomain - blog.mwyman.com, perhaps?). Since I’ve been paying more attention to the photoblog and people I know follow that more closely, it makes a little more sense to move more in that direction. And besides, mwyman.com is easier to tell people than nysaverse.org… Not sure what I’d do with this site, though. Perhaps I could actually write an iPhone app and use this site as the base. Eh… future talk! Must get through the holidays, first!Until then…

Vacation

July 30th, 2008

It’s been so long since I’ve posted… While this past month has had much stress involved — mostly work related — the past two weeks have also seen my first real vacation of this year.

So two weeks ago Jenny and I went to California for the SSP 50th class anniversary. Along the way we met up with my brother (also in town for the reunion), and later with a very good, long-time friend Brad and his wife Katie. While we didn’t have nearly enough time with anybody (only so much you can divvy up four days — including travel), it was nonetheless a good trip and a great break from routine!

My return to work involved a fair amount of stress, partly related to goings-on during the two work-days of the SSP trip. The end result was my burn-out from the long slog of this release cycle got greatly magnified, and it was emotionally a very difficult week to get through.

Thankfully, last Friday I started a week–long vacation with Jenny and her Family to Door County, Wisconsin. Every year Jenny’s family rents a house in Door County and her (almost entire) mother’s side comes to stay for some part of the week! We’re now unfortunately drawing towards the end of the trip, but it has been a very relaxing and rejuvenating week. One thing to mention — tonight Jenny and I spent the evening at Door County’s drive-in movie theater (saw the new Batman and Get Smart), which was quite the experience for me (I’d never been to one). I enjoyed the experience, even though I don’t think I’d want to see every movie at a drive-in — still it has a certain charm you don’t get elsewhere!

I’ve also managed to snag a good set of pictures that will make it up onto the photoblog fairly soon (my current queue runs out shortly), including many I’ve gotten while playing with one of my new toys, an NDX filter for my wide-angle lens (NDX = 10-stop neutral density filter, essentially a solar filter allowing me very long shutter speeds — great for smoothing out water!). My next photo updates will have to include some pictures from the SSP trip, as well, but except for an Arboretum visit in Pasadena the trip was rushed enough that I didn’t get much for photoblog pictures.

Well, that’s all for the moment — it’s time to sleep and prepare for relaxing some more tomorrow. Keep watching my photoblog and you’ll soon see my photos! (the one at the top of the post is a teaser!)
